South facing slope is great for beginners, plenty of room to land with open fields at the bottom of the hill. |
| Otford |
Otford / Stanwell Park |
NSW |
E, SE, S |
A huge site with great lift. 2 locations to fly. 1) Opposite apple pie shop. 2) 500mts further north at lookout area. Site is a registered slope of the NSWSSA, so permission is required to fly. See the NSWSAA section of this website for more information. Landing area can be tight, lots of spectators. |
| Black Head |
Gerroa |
NSW |
N, NE, E |
Good site that will cater to crunchies. There are several faces to fly from so go for a walk and see which suits the wind the best. The northern slope is probably the best for crunchies as there is a huge amount of grassland behind the slope for landing. |
| North Bombo headland |
Bombo Quarry, Kiama |
NSW |
S |
Fantastic slope for those heavy southerlies that pump along the Kiama south coast. There are 2 flying sites. The first is the car park which provides some landing area for fragile planes.. but not much. The second slope is 100mtrs further out along the headland. In strong winds (30+knots) this second slope will give huge thick lift with rock platform at base of cliff to pick up fallen planes. A little grass for landing, but mainly rocky. Epp and Coreflute only. |
| HILL 60 |
Port Kembla |
NSW |
NE, E, SE, S |
Excellent flying site best in NSW. North slope and also a southern slope on other side of the hill which has a great bowl effect both great flying slopes. Plenty of lift for beginers to expert flyers, plenty of room for aerobatics, 10 meters from carparking good 360 veiw of the whole of Illawarra, havent flown any where better. I rate it 10 out of 10. |
| Dobroyd Point |
Seaforth, Sydney |
NSW |
SE, S |
Big bowl with tonnes of lift. Oval directly behind can be used for landing "delicate" gliders. Not great for combat as plenty of scrub makes for finding models hard. Huge lift in a SE wind. Lots of room. |
| Dixon Park Beach |
Newcastle NSW |
NSW |
SE, SW |
Great in a SEaster, heaps of lift, even been flying in as low as 5-6kt wind there! Good for beginners as there is virtually no place to loose your model.(Just have to not hit peoples homes that overlook the beach :) Real pretty, and easily accessed on a public road. |
| Merewether |
Merewether Headland |
NSW |

Located on the Southern end of Merewether beach. Drive down Hickson St to you get to the water tower. Pros: Has a great grassed landing area. Cons: Hang Gliders and dense scrub. |
| Bonny Hills |
Bonny Hills |

Great Site for sloping, Beginers to expert pilots. South of Port Macquarie, next to shark beach. Also popular with hang gliders. |
| Dudley Bluff |
Dudley |
NSW |
NE |
Great site with fantastic views over the ocean, loads of lift in a NE even with light to moderate wind, can be nasty for the inexperienced as drops away as a sheer cliff to the ocean after about 35 mtrs. |
| Killalea State Recreational Area |
5 klms south of Shellharbour Village |
NSW |
E, SE |
Nice Smooth lift straight of the ocean, can be a little hard to land, lots of lantana and rocks. Flying straight from the carparks so no long hikes. Worth a look if your in the area . |
| Long Reef |
Long Reef Headland, Northern Beaches, Sydney |

Very nice slope for all wind conditions. Recovery is easy on the NE face for those "kills" during combat. |

This site is on lower Homestead Rd opposite the Heritage Golf & Country Club UBD map ref 200 J7. It's a Parks state park reserve. A great place I found looking around for a slope not far from my home in Mooroolbark. You have to leave your car at the gate and walk up the track about 100 metres. This is not a huge site and I am only new to Slope Soaring, but I have had a lot of fun flying my Zagi 3C. |
| ALVIE ( Red Rock ) |
North of Colac |
VIC |
All wind directions |
Colac is about 75km west of Geelong, Alvie is about 15 mins nth of Colac, Red Rock is the result of volcanic eruptions & the near vertical slopes give excelent lift in all directions. Landing area is mainly restricted to car park but is not too difficult. |
| Flinders |
Flinders, Golf links rd |
VIC |
S, SW, SE |
Nice site with a large bowl, landing is on the golf coarse fairways so watch out for golf balls. Hang gliders and parasailers can be a problem on this site and you may be forced to move further down the slope for safe flying. Melways Ref: 261 J10 |
| Sandringham yacht club |
Down jetty road, pull into the first parking lot that overlooks the ocean (the lot after the toilets), there's a slope that faces the beach |
VIC |
S, SW |
Not the biggest slope around but the steep grass slope facing the beach is a great location to cruise around with a big floater or to test fly a new plane. You have the whole beach to land if you don't want to land in the parking lot. |
| Unnamed |
Near sandringham yacht club, past the footy oval. |
VIC |
N, W, NW |
It's a bit tricky to explain where it is but here I go, you need to find your way to the small footy oval that comes off jetty road. Walk across the oval (towards windsurf hire) and at the far end there will be a track, walk all the way up and you will find yourself looking at a long bending slope over two club houses of some sort. There are plenty of areas to land as long as you have a foamie but this site's not great for fiberglass or balsa gliders. The long easy bend allows for alot of wind directions to be flown. |
| Phillip island |
The whole island |
VIC |
All Wind Directions |
The small island has all directions of cliffs and hills, well worth the long drive if you plan on staying for the weekend or you are already going down for some reason. If you find a site on the island and the wind direction's wrong, jump in the car drive for 10 minutes and you'll find the right slope. |
| Torquay |
Torquay, surf coast |
VIC |
SE, S |
Great slope (large sand dune) that stretches for a few kilometers, great for slope cross country. Lookout for occasional hangliders. Sand dune means nice landing on the beach and quite forgiving shrubbery on slope. |
| Mentone Beach |
Opposite Beach Rd, in between Plummer Rd and Mundy St |
VIC |
S, SW |
Long slope that stretches almost all the way to the Charman Rd cliff, some areas are grassy while other parts have dense vegitation. Fiberglass or balsa planes can land on the beach, while foamies can land in one of the many trees or take their chances in the small parks. |
| Big Hill |
200km west of Melbourne |
VIC |
S, SW |
Launch is about 200 meters above ground level with a steep slope with no trees. There is a good bowl which works with SSW the best, but with a good southerly of more than 10 knots you don't need to worry about it. Landing can be a bit tricky as the only real place is on the top of the hill, and if you get to far back you find out quickly that you can't get back! Best bet is to put it down crosswind across the top, but this isn't a problem. Higher than Hollow Back, better lift, but not as big and harder to land. |
| Mt Moornambool |
250km west of Melbourne |
VIC |
All |
This is on private property but the owner will let you fly it if you ask nicely. You can fly any wind direction here as long as there is enough wind, though the best direction is SW, which is luckily the most common direction. Launch height is 250 metres above ground with no trees on the slope except some small bushes right on the top and long grass, which is good, as the rocks lower on this slope could turn a 747 into powder if it tried to land here! It helps if you can catch your models here! But other than that it has killer lift! |
| Charman Rd |
End of Charman Rd, Mentone |
VIC |
SE, S, SW |
Watch out for paragliders that often fly along here. The blackberries on the slope can make it hard to retrieve your plane if you crash in them. Landing space is ok but can be hazardous for larger gliders. |
| Red Bluff |
The end of Red Bluff Rd, Sandringham-Blackrock |
VIC |
W |
Small park with little landing space you may have to use a tree to land. Good for days where a westerly is blowing and you cant fly at the other sites. |
| London Bridge |
Near Portsea |
VIC |
S |
A good spot near Melbourne is on the Bass Strait side of Portsea: There is a Hang Glider launching area close to the "London Bridge" parking area where Zagis have been seen in the air... Thanks to DKW for sending this to me (Scoob). |

| Lake George ACT |
Federal HWY just as you come up from lake bottom on the left side of cutting |
ACT |
E |
South end of lake bed as the hwy rises up through the cutting heading towards canberra. On the left side just as you come up there's a scenic lookout with carpark. When you park your car you go to the right side of hill and walk up cutting aprox 50 metres to a fence, go through a proceed another 100 metres. You will see a comunications aerial on top of hill. About midway between fence and aerial is the best location. When a easterly blows, this place is magic |

In ACT, Southside of Chapman great fun in 30knt westerlies :o). |
| Queensland |
| Eli Ck |
Entrance to Eli Creek, Fraser Island |
QLD |
SW, W |
Good height can be achieved on this slope, I found it while waiting to cross Eli ck at high tide, you have to climb up a sandune to get to the top and once your up there you'll have to land on the beach, and try not to land in the creek. :) |
| Upper Beachmont Hangliding |
Upper Beachmont |
QLD |
SE, S |
The best site I have ever been to. The air space is un believeable due to the fact that you are positioned on top of the Hinterland ranges. I have achieved heights of over 400 feet with nothing more than a Zagi 3c which brings me to my next point.... no landing room. I haven't tried it yet but I intend to land my ASW 28 1/3 scale on the farm behind the slope. |
| Indian Head |
Indian Head, Fraser Island |
QLD |
N, S |
There are some rocks up the top of the slope, so the time I flew there I decided to land on the beach, which is kinda hard because people look like ants from up there and the perspective is wierd, I flew Indian head on a northerly wind but southerly should be fine as well. Its quite big so on a strong wind you should be able to get lots of height. Access is off the beach on a path up to the top. |

Turn into Cutts rd and follow out until reaching flying site near sea FM aerial, site allows winching of gliders and small electric planes, no petrol planes allowed, ideal slope conditions. |
| Western Australia |
| Twilight Cove |
Esperance Western Australia |
WA |
E, SE, S, SW |
This site has to be one of best sites in Western Australia to fly. Esperance is the windiest place in Western Aust so you can never say it's not blowing down here. But you can get freak conditions that make it a floater or handlaunch day. Generally the wind starts at midday and stops just after sunset most of the year. From october to march you can expect s/e to s/w up to 50 knots with an average of 18 knots added to a 250 foot slope near vertical off the southern ocean which generates some serious lift conditions.. |
